Thinking of deserting? They're everywhere these days and plenty of them allow for off-roading. Check out the California State Parks website (www.parks.ca.gov/) for starters (they have a list of ohv areas) and www.blm.gov (that'd be the Bureau of Land Management) and don't forget your canteen.
