I know I've mentioned it before, but Louis' is such a lovely place to spend a rainy day lunch. Manhattan clam chowder, tuna melt, coffee or wine and a fine view of the waves breaking below. I think I pick the same booth every time.

Foggy inside and out? The best time for a trip to Louis' is definitely during the week, but if you just can't play hooky opt for later in the day as weekend breakfasts get busy, busy. Still the throngs of people at Ocean Beach tend to thin out when the water starts pouring down and the ones who stay are generally at the Cliff House anyway. At 902 Point Lobos Ave, Louis' is just a few steps away from that other institution and a good deal cheaper. The same family has owned and worked its tiny dining room since forever ago and they're still cash only and don't do dinner, so get there before 4:30 (6pm on Sat and Sun) if you don't want to be saddened by a big old closed sign.
